"This is one of those books that you pick up and don't put down until you finish. Simply written and emotionally astute, When She Flew got me involved with these characters and wanting to see what was coming next." "I started and finished this book in one day. I love the way that Shortridge rendered the morally complex issues of parental vs government responsibility in a child's life and what constitutes a good parent and a suitable home, while also delicately touching upon issues of child abuse and the mental and physical health of soldiers returning and what they face returning home from war."

"This novel would make it a great pick for a book club because of the discussion and debate potential the moral and social problems present."

"I found it to be thought-provoking, fast-paced, and fun to read. The plot never suffered as we learned more about Jess and Lindy's past, their insecurities, their regrets, and their joys. It felt right that a mother longing to be part of her own daughter's life again would fight so hard to see that Lindy and Ray stayed together. She provides Lindy with the strong and secure female role model her mother could never be. It also made me question my perceptions of what makes a home both physically and emotionally. I was as entertained throughout this novel as I was satisfied when I finished it."

"I may have a bit of bias here, since I was already a fan of Jennie Shortridge before picking up When She Flew, but let me just say that this book was pretty wonderful. I definitely expected something great after loving Love and Biology at the Center of the Universe, and I was not at all disappointed.
"I really loved When She Flew and would highly recommend the novel. I found it just about impossible to put down, it drew me in from the beginning and really never let go. I'm happy to say that Jennie Shortridge not only lived up to my expectations with this read, she defied them by writing a book even better than what I've read from her in the past."

"I was easily swept into this intertwined set of stories... of a woman and of a girl and how the intersection of their lives altered their courses forever."

"Beyond the masterful characterization, the plot is very fast-paced and this novel will make short work of an afternoon, since the prose is so effortless and the story gripping and suspenseful."

"Jennie Shortridge does an amazing job of telling this story in a way that unfolds beautifully and realistically. I knew once I read the first few pages I was going to like it. Not only did I like Jess right off the bat, I fell right into the groove of Shortridge's wonderful writing style. It was a very pleasurable read and now I'm looking forward to reading her previous book, Love and Biology at the Center of the Universe that I've heard so much about."
